Call for Applications: Zurich Summer School for Women in Political MethodologyCamps 22.02.2018
Deadline: 16 March 2018
Open to: current and future PhD students, as well as postdocs and junior scholars
Venue: 1-8 July 2018 in Zürich, Switzerland
The Zurich Summer School for Women in Political Methodology is a fellowship program hosted by the Department of Political Science (IPZ) of the University of Zurich (UZH) with the aim of establishing a European network of women working in political methodology and data science. In 2018, the Summer School will take place on 1-8 July.
During the 7-day program, the Summer School seeks to promote technical skills, provide mentorship, and encourage networking and peer support for women working with quantitative social scientific research methods, in particular in Political Science.
Every year, the Summer School offers a core program on computational methods that includes: Functions in R, Scraping, Simulations, Advanced Graphics, and Text Analysis. In 2018, the Summer School will also offer a course on Social Network Analysis.
The final day of the Summer School is always dedicated to a supervised Hackathon during which fellows have the opportunity to brainstorm, develop, and be mentored on a project of their choice. This might include a data visualisation project, simulations, writing piece of code, analysing (new) data, or building a professional website.
The Summer School is designed for current and future PhD students, as well as postdocs and junior scholars who identify as women* and who work in the field of Political Science or related disciplines.
Participation in the Summer School requires some prior statistical knowledge, as well as a basic R skills. If you are not familiar with R yet, we have put together a list of links to (free) online courses that will help you get up to speed.
As a competitive fellowship, the Summer School is free of charge. The fellowship includes tuition, accommodation, transportation, lunch and a conference dinner. This is possible thanks to a generous GRC grant from the University of Zurich’s Graduate Research Campus and additional funding from the IPZ.
Accommodation will be either arranged privately – meaning that external students will be hosted by Zurich-based participants – or in shared rooms of two. If you are applying from a Zurich-based university, please note that you might be requested to host an external participant during the summer school. This is part of our effort to promote collaboration between participants and build a network of like-minded scholars.
The goal of the Zurich Summer School for Women in Political Methodology is to strengthen the methodological skills and professional network of young career researchers who identify as women. To encourage applications from different universities and backgrounds, we offer fellowships for successful applicants. The fellowship covers:
- Full tuition costs for the summer school courses
- Travel reimbursements up to 250 CHF
- Accommodation for the duration of the summer school. External participants will either be accommodated in private housing by staying with Zurich-based participants, or share rooms of two with other external participants at a local guest house/hostel.
- A conference dinner
- Lunch, as well as coffee breaks on all days of the summer school
The deadline for applications is 16 March 2018 at midnight (CEST).
Places in the Summer School are limited, so the application is intended to determine if the program is a good fit for you. In 2018, there are 15 funded places available, of which 10 places are intended for external participants and 5 places are reserved for participants from Zurich-based universities.
