Seminar Series on „Sustainable Development:

regional and interregional cooperation in Central Asia”

Bielefeld University and TU Dortmund University in cooperation with the German-Kazakh University (DKU) will organize a Seminar Series in the framework of the research-based professionalization project “Between Stability and Transformation: Regional and Transnational Cooperation in Central Asia and between Central Asia and Europe”funded by Volkswagen Foundation.

The Seminar-Series is designed for junior researchers - mainly advanced master students, PhD-Scholars and postdoctoral scholars - from Central Asian and neighboring countries working on the topic of Sustainable Development in Central Asia. The call seeks to attract participants looking at the contribution of regional and interregional cooperation to sustainable development employing both an institutional and societal (especially concerning the role of civil society) level of analysis. The seminars will be characterized by a participatory and practice-oriented approach, involving interactive lecturing of senior researchers from Europe, the US and Central Asia as well as peer-to-peer learning. Particular attention will be given to the professionalization of the participants by providing ad-hoc theoretical and methodological supervision for their research projects and intense training on transferrable techniques and skills. In addition, special sessions will be organized to support participants in the preparation of a paper/chapter to be included in a final publication on“Sustainable Devel-opment in Central Asia” related to this seminar series. Three distinct two-day seminars will be organized in the framework of this initiative.

The first seminar focused on Theories of and Approaches to regional and interregional cooperation and sustainable development will take place in Almaty on 13.-14. July 2018.

The second seminar focused on Research Methodologies and Methods will be held on 7.-8. September 2018. The final seminar on Transferable Techniques and Skills will be organized on 9.-10. November 2018.

Bielefeld University and TU Dortmund University with the kind support of Volkswagen Foundation are able to grant 15 scholarships supporting travel and accommodation and invite interested junior researchers from all Central Asian countries to apply.

The application should contain all relevant information such as:
a) A short letter of Motivation (not more than 1 page)
b) Curriculum Vitae and
c) A draft of the paper/chapter to be developed in framework of this seminar-series.
