Call for Applications, Model European Union Strasbourg 2019Conferences 25.12.2018
Deadline: 6 January 2019
Open to: participants between the ages of 18 and 27 years old
Venue: 6– 13 April 2019 in Strasbourg, France
MEUS will happen for the 13th time next year – 6-13 April 2019 – just a few weeks before the Elections to the European Parliament in May.
Less than 40% of young European citizens cast their vote at the 2014 Elections to the European Parliament. Undoubtedly, the European project needs to be brought closer to today’s youth if we do not wish to trump this negative record in May 2019. Each year, we give around 200 young people the rare opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of different stakeholders in an authentic simulation of the EU’s legislative process and attempt to reach a political compromise over the course of an intense week of negotiation and debate.
MEUS – highly commended for its realistic representation of the European Parliament – is designed to educate participants about the EU and show them how decisions are made in a diverse political landscape. By making the European institutions more tangible and the Union’s importance more salient in their minds, we increase our participants’ interest in EU politics and inspire the emergence of a genuine European civil society from the bottom up.
We strongly believe in the importance of democratic participation in EU decision-making – but true participation must be based on awareness and access to information. With each edition of MEUS, we are trying to fill in the gap of misinformation and disengagement of young people in European-level politics. By engaging them in a realistic reenactment of the Ordinary Legislative Procedure, we attempt not only to educate but also to show the complexities and difficulties associated with the process, building upon what MEUS has already been successfully doing for the past 12 years: turning young people into engaged EU enthusiasts.
In 2019, we want to put the European elections at the front and centre of the conference by adding a Council decision on the European elections as third topic for participants.
Note that we can only accept applicants who have not already taken part in a Model European Union Strasbourg conference in the past, and we will only accept applicants who will be between 18 and 27 years of age during the conference. We also recommend a level of proficiency in English equivalent to B2 to have the best experience at MEUS 2019.
Once you have submitted your application, you can expect your result by the beginning of February 2019.
In case you are accepted to take part in MEUS 2019, you will be required to pay a participation fee of 150€ in February 2019. The fee covers:
- Seven nights of accommodation
- Unlimited public transportation during the whole duration of the conference

MEUS puts a strong emphasis on enabling economic and social diversity for participants with fewer opportunities through financial support. Because of this, there is a Social Fund which can provide a scholarship for MEUS to anyone who needs it. Such support can be given in the form of participation fee waivers, travel reimbursement and visa reimbursements. Applying for the Social Fund takes place via email. For more information, see the application form.
