Call for Applications, Law Essay Competition 2018




One of the most indispensable skills of a lawyer is legal drafting. From the university to court – a lawyer can never do without drafting. The ability to argue and introduce ideas in an organized and well-structured way is of crucial importance when it comes to application of law and proper protection of rights.

The IBAHRI Law Essay Competition aims to encourange and stimulate new ideas, approaches and discussions among the Azerbaijani students and youth community in the field of human rights and legal profession. The participants will be asked to address some of the most pressing issues they see in their country and champion intellectual leadership.

The Law Essay Competition will close on 11 November 2018 . Both winners and runners-up will be awarded in a ceremony at the Law Days Forum in December 2018 in Baku.

The winners of the Law Essay Competition will be selected by a panel of five judges – law professors, practicing lawyers, legal academics, international law experts.

  • Nathan Derejko, Teaching Fellow in Human Rights, University College London 
  • Konul Gasimova, European Human Rights Lawyer

Essay topics

The IBAHRI Law Essay Competition is open to all Azerbaijani students and young professionals who are keen to explore:

  1. Human rights issues and challenges related to Azerbaijan; or
  2. The situation of the legal profession in Azerbaijan.

Participants are free to choose a general or more specific topic of the essay as long as it stays within the above stated topics.

Main rules

  1. Essay language is English only.
  2. The final essay must be no more than 5.000 words.
  3. Essays must be typed.  
  4. The decision of the competition jury will be final and not subject to appeal.
  5. All entries will be checked for plagiarism. Plagiarized pieces will be rejected and the participant will be banned from participating in any future competition.
  6. The essays must be submitted by 11 November 2018.
  7. You should be the only author of your essay. Co-authorship is not allowed.
  8. Formats accepted are .doc, .docx, .pdf.
  9. The essay document name should include your full name and essay topic to be submitted to

Judgment and Award

The winner and runners-up will be announced at the Law Days Forum event, that will take place in December 2018, in Baku (the exact date tba).


Data protection information

Participants’ personal information will be held in accordance with GDPR and the IBA Privacy Policy: The essays will be shared with judges outside the UK, but will be anonymised. The personal information and essays will be retained for 6 years, in accordance with our grant-funders requirements.
