Salary: Commensurate with experience

Employment details: Part-time (2 days per week).  Initial contract period to 31st March 2021 with the possibility of extension thereafter.

Financial Responsibilities: Full budget responsibility for communication budget.

Purpose of Job

The Communication Officer is responsible for EuroRAP’s communication with different target groups, including EuroRAP member organisations, road safety organisations at EU-level, road authorities, journalists and policy makers (working in close cooperation with the EuroRAP Secretary General. The Communication Officer will advise other EuroRAP staff (and Board, if appropriate) on communication and use written and verbal skills to create a wide range of communication materials, including the use of social media. By communicating effectively with EuroRAP’s target audience, the communication officer actively contributes to a positive reputation for EuroRAP, at a European level as well as at a national level.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

The role of the EuroRAP Communications Officer is provided below.  Prioritisation of key responsibilities and accountabilities occurs on an annual basis through our staff performance review process.

Main Accountabilities

  • To carry out the communication strategy for EuroRAP, in close cooperation with the EuroRAP Secretary General, Board member and Executive team.
  • To develop an implementation plan for the communication strategy which contains defined goals and actions aimed at EuroRAP’s main target groups and promoting the idea of national ‘champions’.
  • To deliver the actions described in the implementation plan.

Key Responsibilities

The EuroRAP Communications Officer will work closely with the EuroRAP Secretary General, EuroRAP Board and Executive team to develop and disseminate programme materials celebrating the success of the European programme. This may include:

  • The preparation, editing and distribution of multilingual written, video and web-based programme materials including newsletters, case studies, brochures, infographics, posters, banners, website content and other promotional and information-based collateral to promote EuroRAP and the work of its partners.
  • Manage EuroRAP’s website to ensure content currency and clear presentation of key messages, easy and logical site navigation, and consistent branding presentation. This will include the preparation, editing and posting of content.
  • Actively engage with the iRAP Communications officer and ensure that Europe is represented in all global communications.
  • Proactively manage EuroRAP’s social media presence across the range of platforms (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc) to directly push and respond to opportunities to present EuroRAP as a key road safety stakeholder at the global level and maximise use of key hashtags (e.g. #3StarorBetter).
  • Maintain contacts and databases in line with GDPR guidelines.
  • Provide strategic advice for and management of marketing campaigns around events and advocacy initiatives.
  • Actively promote EC Projects such as Project SLAIN and RADAR.
  • Investigate online training opportunities (e.g. webinars) and proactively manage their hosting.
  • The development of regional, country-level and global media outlets / trade press to facilitate positive presentation and fair and accurate coverage of EuroRAP and partner activities. Maintain current contact details of relevant journalists and trade publications, prepare media releases and manage distribution in association with partner networks, and respond to media enquiries as they arise.
  • Ensure consistent presentation of EuroRAP branding across all programme materials in accordance with the charity’s Corporate Style Guide (including logo, colour and font presentations).
  • Provide support for events and other advocacy and project activities.

Knowledge & qualifications/experience required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field. (Minimum of 2 - 5 years' relevant experience in a communications role.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Used to working with Microsoft Office, content management systems, and social media platforms. Knowledge of desktop publishing software (e.g. Photoshop) is a benefit.
  • Preferably experienced in working for an NGO.
  • Preferably knowledge of, or affinity with, road safety.
  • Knowledge of any of the following would be an advantage:
  • RAP programmes
  • the FIA and its member automobile clubs
  • road or transport agency experience
  • governance in a Membership organisation
  • developing and managing development agency programmes
  • working in or with government
  • working in or with a development institution
  • An ability to lead in a flexible and networked working environment.   This requires the ability to motivate and build high levels of trust between colleagues. 
  • A strong ability to communicate clearly and compellingly in both English and French, in writing and in speech.   Other languages are an advantage particularly Spanish and German.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Good social and diplomatic skills.
  • The postholder will demonstrate, or show they can acquire quickly, a grasp of current international road transport issues concerning sustainable mobility, safety and the environment including road safety policies from a ‘safe systems’ perspective.
