Full Professor of International Relations of the Global South
At pay grade W 3 (minimum salary per month: 7,217 euros) to commence on 1 October 2020. This is a permanent civil service position.
The successful applicant will represent the International Relations of the Global South in his or her research and teaching. He or she will have a sound background in Political Science and International Relations with a track record of empirical research and theoretical contributions. We would particularly welcome a research focus on security, peace and conflict, political hierarchies and resultant global regulatory cooperation. Geographically, the successful candidate will have solid empirical research experience in the Global South. Theoretically, engagement beyond disciplinary boundaries with area studies and the humanities literatures would be appreciated, while engagement with sociological theory is a matter of course.
The successful applicant will have experience in establishing interdisciplinary and cross-faculty research and teaching priorities, for which he/she will play a central role in Bayreuth with regard to International Relations and in the Department of Sociology. This includes linking with the University of Bayreuth’s research focus areas such as “Cultural Encounters & Transcultural Processes” and „Governance & Responsibility“ as well as with the Cluster of Excellence “Africa Multiple” and other projects in the social sciences and humanities. We also expect an active contribution to the University of Bayreuth’s internationalization strategy as well as the fulfilment of responsibilities in academic self-administration. The successful candidate will have an excellent international network in the subject area of the professorship and proven leadership in internationally communicating research.
Teaching is expected to strengthen and further develop the BA degree programmes in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, in particular “Culture and Society”, “Philosophy & Economics” as well as “African Culture and Society”. Aside from wide-ranging teaching in International Relations, the successful candidate should also be able to contribute to the MA programme “Sociology” and to interdisciplinary MA programmes such as “Global History” and “Development Studies”, as well as doctoral training, e.g. at the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS). The ability to teach in English – and in German within three years of being hired – is expected.
In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG). Exceptions are possible in urgent cases.
The University of Bayreuth views the diversity of its staff as an asset and is expressly committed to the goal of gender equality. Female scholars and any persons who can help make the research and teaching profile of the university more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with children are highly welcome. The University of Bayreuth is a member of the best practice club Family at University, and it offers “dual career support” for career-oriented partners of highly qualified employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) returned a favourable review for the University of Bayreuth’s commitment to internationalization. All qualifications being equal, applicants with disabilities will be given priority.
Please send your cover letter and supporting documents (CV outlining education and academic career, list of publications, list of courses taught, experience obtaining external funding, as well as copies of all diplomas and certificates) as a single PDF file (up to 30 MB) to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Jan Otmar Hesse (Dekanat.KuWi@uni-bayreuth.de) by 15 July 2020.
Application documents cannot be returned to the applicant, and if unsuccessful, the files will be permanently disposed of in accordance with data protection law.
