Call for Applications: Journalists for Change – Putting Social Issues on the Front Page

Workshop for journalists, bloggers and media activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine

The regional office “Dialogue Eastern Europe” of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung invites progressive journalists, bloggers and media activists to apply for the workshop on social issues which will take place from the 23rd until the 27th of July 2019 in Odesa (Ukraine).

The political and economic transformation which took place in the countries of the Eastern Partnership region and Russia during the last 30 years brought free markets and new political systems but left social security and prosperity out of reach for a majority of the population. The societies within the region are highly polarized, and there is an immense gap between the rich and the poor. Unfortunately, employment often does not guarantee protection from poverty due to low wages. Furthermore, the population is aging and affected by emigration.Nonetheless, no clear demand is voiced from the societies for a social agenda in politics and socially relevant topics are not among those which dominate the public discourse.

The workshop includes meetings with experts in the fields of social and labor policy as well as journalism. Furthermore, a field trip and exercises with a focus on practical applications are part of the program. The aim of the workshop is not only to strengthen journalistic skills, but above all, to offer participants the possibility to engage with socially relevant topics, formats and approaches. The idea is to motivate participants to produce own articles on social issues in the future.

The goal of the workshop is to enhance the professional expertise of journalists in the fields of social and economic policy as well as to foster the free exchange of journalistic methods and experiences across the Eastern Partnership region and Russia.
